In 2023, Between the Waves — A Nice Mar Fund - was brought to life by Nick, Celeste, and Marcela, (NICE MAR).

Marcela grew up in Colombia, an industrial engineer qualified from the University of Antioquia, and worked across manufacturing and supply chain in Colombia and later internationally. She has recently completed a Master's in International Co-operation, and volunteers for the Red Cross.

Nick grew up in Australia, worked across the advertising and publishing industries, and founded several businesses, including being the largest magazine publisher in Nicaragua.

Celeste is just starting high school but has experienced life in Australia, Colombia, Portugal, and Spain.

Our family has appreciated the benefits of living in countries like Australia and Spain, while also experiencing the difficulties of countries like Nicaragua and Colombia.

We think the difference between countries is rarely down to luck or resources, it depends on political and institutional integrity. Democracy works better when it works for the many, not the few. 

According to almost all world indexes, and real-life experience, regarding how we live, the countries which uphold the rule of law, free and fair elections, separation of powers, fundamental rights, and an independent judiciary, are also the best places to live.

Mission

A lot of people are apathetic about democracy and politics. They don't see the system helping them or they find it boring. We work with those showing it doesn't have to be that way.

We back people and organisations listening to people's issues, finding fun ways to generate curiosity, question existing beliefs, and create solutions based on evidence rather than rhetoric.

Vision

Many people greet their neighbours, sign a petition, join a local clean-up, and get things done together. They just don't call it politics.

Our vision is a future where people apply that same thinking, when asking whether democracy and politicians are also getting things done. Not listening to who is shouting the loudest but measuring what is being delivered.

A more rational world through civil conversations

Street Epistemology International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the worldwide propagation of Street Epistemology, a method for helping people critically reflect on the quality of their reasoning through civil conversation. The organization developed the Navigating Beliefs course, a free, accessible, self-paced resource designed to teach people how to have more productive discussions

We believe in democracy and our work is aimed at a better, more informed democratic debate. We design work and research to influence and persuade policymakers, politicians and to shift the public debate. We are fiercely non-partisan but we don't shy away from engaging in politics and political debates.

The Australia Institute has a 30-year history of successfully changing public policy—like making the Stage 3 tax cuts better and fairer, and establishing the national corruption watchdog—using independent research combined with high-impact public advocacy. We change minds.

Alliance4Europe is a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and advancing democracy in Europe.

We bring communities, networks, and movements together to cooperate, develop impactful solutions, and launch campaigns that drive change — working in tandem like cylinders powering a shared engine for European democracy, countering autocracy and hybrid threats.

We state our views freely and fully, without fear. We treat people who disagree with us with honesty, dignity and respect.

We welcome opportunities to engage those with whom we disagree. We believe all of us have blind spots and none of us are not worth talking to.

Everyone Hates Elon 

On January 20th 2025, we watched from the UK as Elon Musk walked on stage at Donald Trump's inauguration and did THAT salute. Twice. Millions of us couldn't afford basic things in the supermarket, yet the richest man on earth chose to spread hatred, instead of sharing his wealth.

We were angry. We were sick of billionaires telling us to blame immigrants for problems they created. We started coming up with ideas to take on Elon Musk and his friends.
