Between The Waves

A Nice Mar Fund

Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Mission and Vision

Mission

Fighting rising inequality, authoritarianism, and disinformation to defend the core pillars of a fair and just world — human rights, freedom of expression, and social justice.

We support individuals and organizations using creative strategies to mobilize action beyond those who already agree.

Vision

If we want freedom, equality, and justice, then we are the only ones to deliver it.
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time*.
We are the communities; we are the countries.

If we want to flourish with opportunity and dignity, we are the only ones who know what that looks like — and we are the only ones to shape it.

* Barack Obama

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter - Martin Luther King Jr.

WHO

In 2023, Between the Waves — A Nice Mar Fund was brought to life by Nick, Celeste, and Marcela, (NICE MAR) driven by the idea that poverty is not a natural phenomenon. In most cases it is created by systems that benefit; rich nations, multinational corporations and powerful individuals.

We believe that the foundations of a fair, just, and sustainable society rest on the pillars of a functioning democracy. We believe in a society where inequality does not undermine democracy, nor threaten people's opportunities and freedoms.

We need to remember democracy is a living system that evolves and improves when people take initiative.

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. Nelson Mandela

Who we support

Between the Waves are especially interested to invest in creative and transformational approaches to creating public action against; rising inequality, authoritarianism, and disinformation.

The Human Rights Law Centre uses strategic legal action, policy solutions and advocacy to support people and communities to eliminate inequality and injustice and build a fairer, more compassionate Australia.

An Australia where everyone is free to lead a decent, dignified life; where our laws, policies and institutions promote fairness and equality; and where people and communities have the power to address inequality and injustice, and ensure that governments always act in the public interest.

The Australia Institute

We believe in democracy and our work is aimed at a better, more informed democratic debate. We design work and research to influence and persuade policymakers, politicians and to shift the public debate. We are fiercely non-partisan but we don't shy away from engaging in politics and political debates.

Our mission is to ensure that Australians are equipped, empowered and enabled to uphold their digital rights. We believe that digital rights are human rights which see their expression online.

Our vision is for a digital world where all humanity can thrive, and where diversity and creativity flourishes.

To ensure this, our digital world must be underpinned by equality, freedom and established human rights principles. Its evolution and future must be guided and driven by the interests of all people and the environments we live in.

Transparency International

We are part of a global movement against corruption.

Transparency International Australia is the national chapter of Transparency International, a global coalition against corruption operating in over 100 countries. Each chapter is independent and unique, and together we aspire to a unified vision: a world free of corruption.

Established in 1978, Human Rights Watch is known for its accurate fact-finding, impartial reporting, effective use of media, and targeted advocacy, often in partnership with local human rights groups. Each year, Human Rights Watch publishes more than 100 reports and briefings on human rights conditions in some 90 countries, generating extensive coverage in local and international media. With the leverage this brings, Human Rights Watch meets with governments, the United Nations, regional groups like the African Union and the European Union, financial institutions, and corporations to press for changes in policy and practice that promote human rights and justice around the world.

Right now, inequality is trapping billions of people in poverty. It's causing a record number of people to lose their livelihoods, struggle for essentials and face extreme hunger — all while a handful of people hold inconceivable wealth.

It's unfair, unjust and unacceptable. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Together, we have the power to create an equal world without the inequalities that keep people in poverty.
